Recent Activities
The whole school visited Tacon’s Farm to learn how potatoes, onions and pumpkins are grown. Each pupil picked their own potato and onion and Year 6s were lucky and got to pick a pumpkin each. We will be using the produce to make pumpkin soup and potatoes cons for our Harvest Festival celebrations so keep checking the website to see what we make!
A big thank you to Emma and Tacon’s Farm for teaching us about farming and for donating all we picked!
We started this week with creative art. Using a combination of salt dough and anything we found lying around outside, we made some interesting creations. Our session then split into different activities. We placed a piece of string around our feet and investigated what was going on in the ground beneath. We found lots of exciting bugs by sweeping them gently into plastic cups then we let them go again into their natural environment. The other activity combined our teamwork and construction skills to build a den using branches and leaves. We created some great dens.
This week, we have been learning about the features of fiction and non-fiction books. As reading detectives, we looked for clues to help us sort the books into groups. Some of the books were really tricky to work out like the book about fossils that looked like a story book! We came up with a table of clues to help us work out if a book was fiction or non-fiction.
This week in forest schools we had a fire. We discussed how we keep safe near an open fire and added these to our forest school rules. We looked at how fires are lit today and how Stone Age man would have lit their fires, and what they were used for. We also made charcoal by burning oak sticks in a tin to reduce the amount of oxygen.
At the end of the session, we had the choice of making ‘wood cookie’ name labels to wear in our forest school lessons or playing ‘meet a tree’, where we were led blind folded to a tree, felt all around it then saw if we could recognise it when our blind folds were removed.
Today saw the start of our forest school’s session. We revisited our safety rules and played the tennis ball game to enhance our listening skills. This week we learned how bees collect honey. Running to collect water with a pipette, we emulated how bees fly back and forth to gather nectar. At the end of the session, we had a choice of looking for wasp galls or creating a ‘nature crown’ with string and items we gathered.
